In North Platte, Nebraska this October 25, 2011, two young boys, ages 5 and 3, were found in a home inside a 42X32 inch animal kennel secured with a wire tie. The Police Department were called to the home and discovered extremely unsanitary living conditions with dirty clothes, trash and animal feces. Four adults, ages 20-25 were arrested. Two other children, a 7 year old and an 8 month old were also in the home at the time of the arrests, but were not being confined.
On October 4, 2011, Salina officers and medic units responded to a call that a 14 month old child was not breathing and cold to the touch. The little boy, Clayton Urbanek, was treated at the Salina Regional Helath Center and transferred to a Wichita hospital where he died. The mother’s boyfriend, Antonio Brown, was arrested that day with the child’s mother, Brittney Betzold arrested on October 18.
Both the North Platte and Salina stories, with the raging comments by the public, can be seen at salinapost.com. Following are two posts about Baby Clayden:
I KNOW: I know one of the medical professionals that responded to the code at the hospital. I KNOW the extent of that poor baby’s injuries. There is NO WAY that the mother did not know that this child was being SEVERELY abused. Whether she ever laid an abusive hand on him or not, she is every bit as guilty as the boyfriend of Clayden’s death. Those injureis were NOT all inflicted the day of his death. They had been there a while. Medical professionals with years of trauma experience had never seen anything like this before…..
Anonymous: ….don’t judge her until you know the facts. Looking in, I have been in her shoes…..I went to work, my boyfriend called me and told me my son had “thrown a fit” and hit his head. When I got home the side of his face was bruised……he finally confessed to me that he had backhanded my child bc he wanted a piece of gum……I should have turned him in, and looking back, I wish I would have.
