Con Artists

Con Artists

The most successful ones are highly intelligent, multi-talented and ooze charm.  They have an uncanny way of making success look easy.  They are also liars, thieves and cheats.  They are con artists. One con man, whose name we all recognize, is Charles Ponzi (1882-1949).  Historically considered to be one of the most adept swindlers, his scheme paid early investors returns from the money collected from later investors.  The Ponzi scheme is named after him.  It can be a profitable scheme for a crook, until the rollercoaster crashes to the end of its run…just as it did with Bernie Madoff. Madoff ‘s Ponzi scheme eventually defrauded investors of an estimated 18 billion dollars.   In June, 2009, he was sentenced to 150 years in prison for his brand of white dollar crime.  His sons testified against him telling authorities that their father confessed to running his asset management firm as a massive Ponzi scheme, and quoted him as describing it as “one big lie”. Another notable current day con artist is Frank Abagnale.  The movie “Catch Me if You Can” portrayed his life of stolen identities wherein he portrayed himself as eight separate scam identities including a pilot, attorney, and pediatrician where his self-serving ruse almost cost the life of a sick child.  He was prosecuted and incarcerated in multiple countries before serving just five years in the US prison system.   Since his release, he works as a consultant to the FBI and has made a living lecturing on identity theft. When large-scale tragedies occur, the con artists are quickly on the trail.  Posing as a relative of one of the young victims in the Sandy Hook School shooting, a 37-year-old woman solicited money for the child’s funeral fund.  She was arrested by the FBI for profiting from this con. Teachers Speak out on Guns in Schools

Teachers Speak out on Guns in Schools

It’s easy to be armchair experts who have all the answers to how we should handle violence in our schools in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. The politicians and gun lobbyists, who sit in their fancy Washington DC offices, think they know how best to handle these situations, but do they?  Do we, from where we sit, so removed from the actual tragedy of losing a child, have the answers? Without facts, research and study we cannot know what is best.  Common sense is intuitive, but frequently the solution is counterintuitive.  More guns in our schools to protect our children may be the answer…or not.  Laws supporting more gun control may be the answer…or not.  At issue is the willingness of both sides of the debate to consider all options as viable solutions.  To do otherwise is to simply succumb to a knee-jerk reaction that may do more harm to the freedoms of our citizens, than good in protecting our school children. The most comprehensive position paper I found on the Sandy Hook School Violence was released on December 19, 2012, called, Connecticut School Shooting Position Statement Interdisciplinary Group on Preventing School and Community Violence. Read it in its entirety below. Key points made by these Teachers and Educators were: Inclinations to intensify security in schools should be reconsidered.  We cannot and should not turn our schools into fortresses. Research demonstrates a clear connection between local availability of guns and gun-related violent behaviors. Although guns are never the simple cause of a violent act, the availability of lethal weapons including assault type weapons to youths and adults with emotional disturbance and antisocial behavior poses a serious public health problem. There should be increased efforts to limit inappropriate access to guns and, especially, assault type weapons. Schools

A Mother’s Plea to the NRA: “Please help us protect our children!”

A Mother’s Plea to the NRA: “Please help us protect our children!”

I am writing this letter on Christmas Day with sadness in my heart.  A family debate on gun rights triggered in me a sadness that only a mother could understand.  My thoughts turned to all the mothers in Newtown who lost their children so close to Christmas.  How are they coping?  How are they getting through this day?  How many tears will be shed this Christmas?  There are not only the tears of these mothers, but also the fathers, brothers and sisters and all the extended family.  This tragedy will affect them this Christmas, but also every Christmas hereafter for the rest of their lives.  There will be a sadness in these homes that we, who did not lose a young child in a senseless mass murder, should never lose sight of. In the midst of our sometimes-heated family debate (which is typical whether the subject is gun control, religion or politics), thoughts of the families in Newtown touched me so deeply that I started to cry…and…I couldn’t stop.  When my cries turned to sobs, even those who were most vocal in supporting the rights of gun owners to own the very weapons that killed these children, started to really listen.  They started to hear my mother’s plea. Now I turn my plea to you, the NRA, “Please help us protect our children!” Living here in the Midwest, my opinion that there should be controls over the semi-automatic repeater weapons and large magazine clips, will never be popular.  Many of us, myself included, are from farm families and small towns.  We have a grand tradition of gun ownership, hunting and sportsmanship and have been members of your organization for years.  We value the work you do in promoting sportsmanship, gun safety and most especially in protecting our second amendment rights;

Fox Host calls Muppets Communists

Fox Host calls Muppets Communists

In Fox’s relentless attack on liberals, they breached sacred ground by calling the Muppets, those cuddly little characters, communists; putting Miss Piggy and Kermit in the same category as Stalin or Lenin. Is Eric Bolling, host of Fox’s “Follow the Money” joking?  Joining Bolling in his rant was Dan Gainor from the conservative Media Research Center (MRC’s stated mission is to neutralize the impact of liberal bias in the media) who said, “It’s amazing how far the left will go just to manipulate your kids, to convince them, give the anti-corporate message,” I saw “The Muppets” this weekend and found it to be one of the best feel-good movies I can remember seeing.  Sure, the antagonist was an evil oil barren, but who would you, Misters Bolling and Gainor, like your Dr. Evil to be?  An “illegal alien” from Kenya, or a tree-hugging environmentalist, or maybe someone who believes in the scientific process?  How about a Dr. Evil Scientist who believes in global warming?  Here’s an idea, let’s make Dr. Evil Scientist gay!  Perfect! Gainor was especially opinionated with his rant against the movie, “They’ve been doing it for decades. Hollywood, the left, the media, they hate the oil industry,” he says more, “They hate corporate America. And so you’ll see all these movies attacking it,”…and there’s more to his rant, “attacking the oil industry, none of them reminding people what oil means for most people: fuel to light a hospital, heat your home, fuel an ambulance to get you to the hospital if you need that. And they don’t want to tell that story.” What story don’t you want to tell Mr. Gainor?  That the organization you work for, MRC, receives funding from Exxon Mobil? I, for one, salute you Miss Piggy.  “Heil Comrade Piggy”!

I’m 67 years old, do you of the same age remember what it used to be like? Do you remember what it felt like when a friend died from an illegal and dangerous back alley abortion? Do you recall when it was considered perfectly all right to pay women much less than men for doing the same job. Do you know how hard we all struggled to be considered more than just third class citizens? To the younger women out there, try to imagine what it will be like when you no longer have access to legal and affordable birth control. When you no longer have control over your own bodies and therefore your own destiny. Do you really want to see Roe v Wade repealed? If you can’t plan your own pregnancies, you can’t plan your financial future or your very life. If you want to be forced to have transvaginal probes and allow the government, not your doctor,  to dictate your medical decisions, than vote Republican. Small government? Not really. – Ardean Maxey 3.  It is interesting that the effects of extreme weather have impacted on the political process with Sandy and the RNC earlier.  Yet there has been no mention of climate change in the campaign.  Four years ago the Republicans and Democrats were both talking about it.  John McCain was a coauthor of a carbon limiting
