Psilocybin-stuffed magic mushroom dispensaries in Canada aren’t just for stoners anymore. Spurred by rising demand and evolving research, dispensaries peddling these mind-twirling fungi are popping up across the country. While psilocybin is still illegal, it’s becoming easier to find and buy magic mushrooms online and in stores.
The gray exterior of Dana Larsen’s storefront in Vancouver, British Columbia, belies the mosaic of psychedelia inside. It’s painted with Incan gods spewing lightning and fire and has shelves filled with hemp lip balms and stoner-centric comic books penned by the owner, who also runs a mushroom-preparation session service.
He says he’s been in business for three years and is now expanding to other cities, attracting customers who are looking for a safe way to experience the hallucinogenic effects of the drug. They pay $50 to take a small amount of the mushrooms and meet with a facilitator, who stays with them as they trip. They’re not allowed to leave the service center until they are “riding it out” or their feelings return to normal, and the facilitator can refuse access to anyone who’s having psychosis or thoughts of harming others.

But despite the growing popularity of mushrooms, they remain illegal for recreational use in most places, and people who sell them face stiff legal penalties. Lyman operates openly, advertising in Westword and displaying his phone number, which receives about three calls per day. He says he’s prepared for a regulatory crackdown and wants to grow his company into a full-fledged dispensary. He cites the example of Fun Guyz, a chain that has popped up in dozens of locations throughout Ontario. Its owners have been raided by police, but they’ve always reopened quickly.
