Allergy-Reducing Cleaning Tips

Allergic rhinitis, better known as hay fever, and seasonal allergies are caused by the release of microscopic particles in your home such as pollen, animal dander, house dust mites, cockroaches, and mold spores. The good news is that a few simple precautions and regular cleaning routines can significantly reduce allergy symptoms in your home, helping you enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle. Start by sealing cracks and crevices that can allow allergens in and out of your home. Ensure that your doors and windows are properly sealed, as well as any pet and insect entry points. A door mat at the front of your home will also help trap allergens before they can spread inside.

Keep up with regular vacuuming to remove accumulated dust, dirt and other particles. Be sure to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to eliminate as many allergy-causing particles as possible. Use anti-allergen sprays in your home to denature and neutralize lingering allergens. These sprays are especially helpful in reducing the levels of irritants in your upholstery, carpeting and curtains.

Wash your sheets, pillowcases and blankets weekly in hot water (at least 130 F) to eliminate dust mites. Consider encasing pillows and mattresses in dust mite-proof covers. Replace wool and feather bedding with synthetics to reduce allergic reactions. Remove and wash decorative pillows and stuffed animals to avoid releasing allergens into your sleeping environment.

After a thorough cleaning session, take a break outside to clear your airways and remove any residue from cleaning products. This step will also give your home time to air out before you return to it.
